The Past …

In the spring of 1999, River's Edge Nursery, LLC was born, however that wasn't the beginning. Founder of River's Edge Nursery, Phil Smith, has been in the industry since his teens. At the age of fifteen his experience began at Barnett Nursery pulling weeds and learning plants. Around age eighteen Phil started Smith greenhouses, specializing in poinsettias and other bedding plants. After finishing at Clemson University (1974) in Horticulture, he went to work at Martin's Nursery, followed by Seedsman and then helped Bracken's Nursery develop a re-wholesaling division.

Throughout the younger years, however, there was ambition to one day call a nursery his own. In 1986, Plant Finders of SC began as a small wholesale nursery yard, and over 13 years grew into an operation big enough to turn some heads. In the spring of 1999, McGinnis Farms bought Plant Finders of SC, who eventually sold the company to John Deere Landscapes. At the time of the acquisition, there were approximately 30 acres of trees in production. Since then, River's Edge Nursery has grown to approximately 375 acres in size, producing over 100 species of ornamental trees and shrubs.
